Depending on where you live you can wear a spring suit almost year-round. A 2mm wetsuit won’t feel like you’re overheating when it’s a bit warmer, and conversely can be warm through somewhat temperate conditions. An added plus is the solid sun protection offered where you’re covered up, not to mention excellent protection against board rash.

You’ll also notice you feel more freed up in a springie, and that essentially comes down to there being less neoprene holding you back. In a steamer, regardless of flexibility, when you move to paddle, pop up, turn or whatever it may be, you’ve got to stretch the wetsuit’s neoprene to match your movements. Freeing up your arms and legs, with the added benefit of thinner (and therefore stretchier) neoprene, means less energy spent.

• Flatlock seams: Your basic style of seam, perfectly functional in a 2mm spring suit. Although water sealing isn’t quite as good as a welded or taped seam, it does typically allow a little extra flexibility.
