The O’Neill Mens Psychotech 3/2mm Chest Zip Steamer is a top-of-the-range surfing wetsuit featuring completely sealed seams, Redzone zipper and the extremely supple and flexible neoprene and jerseys that O’Neill has become so well renowned for. It’s a shame you, the internet shopper, are unable to have a feel of this wettie given how ridiculously soft and stretchy the TB3 rubber is.
O’Neill achieves this stretch in the Psychotech 3/2mm by increasing the gas content within the rubber layer of the wetsuit; it’s this gas content (typically nitrogen) that gives the neoprene its high stretch factor (the rubber in a wetsuit is actually a closed-cell foam, learn more about neoprene on our blog about wetsuit differences). It’s a less known fact that the trapped gas inside the middle layer actually makes the suit warmer! To complement this flexibility the seams are welded instead of stitched, with stretchy TBX-3 internal taping, which gives increased flexibility compared to traditional stitched seams.
We reckon the O’Neill Mens Psychotech 3/2mm Chest Zip Steamer is suitable for winter across most of Australia’s east coast – in QLD we would consider this to be on the warm side, but it’d be an ideal thickness around Sydney. Further south and in Victoria you might opt for a 4/3 (at least), but it all depends on personal preference.
To get the most out of your O’Neill Mens Psycho 1 3/2mm Zen Zip Steamer we recommend washing it with the Australian-made Wetsuit Wash and reading our Wetsuit Maintenance Guide.
O’Neill Mens Psychotech 3/2mm Chest Zip Steamer Wetsuit Features:
- Thickness: 3/2mm
- TechnoButter 3: O’Neill’s ultimate material is a market leader in stretch, one feel and you’ll know. Furthermore, it’s their warmest and most lightweight neoprene – everything you expect from a top-range suit.
- TB Air Firewall: O’Neill’s technobutter firewall is present in much of the O’Neill Psycho panelling. It increases thermal retention by trapping tiny air bubbles in the fibre-weave, an idea borrowed from sea mammals like seals.
- Redzone Water Resistant Chest Zip: Building on the same structural properties as the Fuze and Zen Zip to maintain a low profile design in the zipper, the Redzone Zip is designed to stop water infiltrating through the zip closure (a normally vulnerable entry point). Learn more with our seams blog.
- Fluid-Weld Seams: O’Neill has been a strong proponent of removing all stitching from a wetsuit as it’s one of the least stretchy components. They achieve strength and durability, without stitching, but by triple-glueing the panels together. Of course, this is completely sealed against water but the no-stitching equates to more stretch! Learn more about seams with our vlog.
- TBX-3 Internal Taping: This stretchy internal taping is meant to reinforce not just the strength of the welded seams, but also their water sealing.
- Smooth-Skin Neck Gusset: The inner lining of the neck is a highly elastic yet tacky smooth-skin material – this achieves a greater neck seal but also reduces neck abrasion/rashing.
- Woven Kneepads: A durable weave that ensures greater durability around your knees.
- New TB Air MeshSkin Panels: Comfortable mesh panelling that only adds to the already toasty wetsuits.
- Key Pockets
